The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center maintains affordable, high quality early child education programs that support personal development and academic achievement. It is our goal that all Preschool children will enter Kindergarten academically, emotionally and socially ready to succeed in school. All children in our Out of School Time program will develop homework skills, work to grade level and become independent learners. A wide range of exciting workshops are held daily throughout the year. The summer months are packed with exciting field trips that expand the children’s academic success.
The Lighthouse Preschool is an affordable, integrated licensed educational program for children 3-5 years of age. Open from 6:45 am – 5 pm daily, the Lighthouse Preschool provides working parents with a safe and nurturing place to care for their children during the workday. Our program helped develop the RI Early Childhood Education Standards and was designated a Preschool Center of Excellence by the national Early Learning Reading First Program. It is our goal to help build a child’s positive self image and prepare our students for school readiness. In an atmosphere of praise, we create a climate for growth of creativity, curiosity for learning and the courage to try. Hours are 8am-4 pm, but we do have early morning care beginning at 6:45am and late care until 5 pm. DHS is accepted and scholarships are available. One of the goals of Summer Camp is to help prevent the academic slide that normally occurs over the summer. All of the activities are fun, with a wide array of field trips integrated into an experiential learning curriculum that increases the camper’s knowledge base. Activities include Save the Bay Exploration Center, catching crabs at Ft. Getty, building underwater robots at Naval Undersea Warfare Center, conducting experiments at local salt marshes, sailing lessons at Sail Newport, beach trips and surfing lessons, hiking the nature trails at Ballard Park and Norman Bird Sanctuary, rock climbing and archery lessons at the Newport County YMCA, visiting the biomedical lab at URI, and onsite art classes, performing arts opportunities, and physical activities.
