Educational Programs

The Lighthouse Preschool
is an affordable, integrated licensed educational program for children 3-5 years of age which relates to all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. Our program helped develop the RI Early Childhood Education Standards and was designated a Preschool Center of Excellence by the national Early Learning Reading First Program.  It is our goal to help build a child’s positive self image and prepare our students for school readiness. In an atmosphere of praise, we create a climate for growth of creativity, curiosity for learning and the courage to try.  For more information, email Sally Swistak, Childcare Director, at sswistak@mlkccenter.org or call her at 846-4828 x117.

The Lighthouse After School Academy is a quality before and after school program for students in grades K-6.  Serving students from Newport County, we offer affordable programming in support of our students’ schools.  Upon arrival, the children are served a healthy snack, then receive homework help and participate in workshops focusing on a wide range of activities.  We are very fortunate to have numerous volunteers available for individual tutoring.  Workshops may include dance, art, science, math, nutrition, community gardening, and field trips.  For more information, email Jeanine Richardson, After School Coordinator, at jrichardson@mlkccenter.org or call her at 846-4828 x111.

Summer Adventure Camp is a literacy, science and math based program.  One of the goals of Summer Camp is to help prevent the reading slide that normally occurs over the summer.  For the past 8 years, over 90% of our children have maintained or increased their reading levels over the summer.  All of the activities are fun, with lots of field trips integrated into a curriculum that increases the camper’s knowledge base.  Activities have included going to the beach, visiting Save the Bay, conducting experiments at local salt marshes, touring the wave simulator at Newport Naval Station, sitting in a helicopter, tending a community garden, creating wonderful art projects, visiting the International Yacht Restoration School, cooking nutritious meals and snacks, and participating in physical challenges.  For more information, email Jeanine Richardson, Summer Camp Coordinator, at jrichardson@mlkccenter.org or call her at 846-4828 x111.

In order to teach our clients the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, we are excited to offer the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families program.  Led by a local nutritionist, the program consists of cooking classes for the children in our education programs in combination with family dinners enjoyed by the whole family.  Our nutritionist also provides valuable healthy eating tips to our food pantry clients and to members of our community at large.  Included in the program are classes in Zumba, hip hop, non-competitive physical activity, using the SPARK curriculum, and yoga.
