Founded in 1922 and renamed honoring Dr. King in 1968, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals, families and seniors. An independent nonprofit, the MLK Community Center fights hunger, promotes health, educates young and school aged kids, supports families, and engages seniors all across Newport County, Rhode Island.

Client Support Specialist

Position Summary: The Client Support Specialist will work closely with members of the Stepping Stones case management project, helping members reach their individual goals towards self-sufficiency. The Client Support Specialist will work closely with the Executive Director, the Dietitian, the Receptionist, and all Program Coordinators to provide referral services to clients, both within the MLK Community Center and to outside agencies. The Client Support Specialist will do all new client intakes.


The Client Support Specialist will interact with clients, staff, volunteers and other community organizations; it is essential that the candidate be empathetic, courteous, highly organized, professional, meticulous with detail and protocol. As a member of a small staff that relies heavily on teamwork, it is also necessary that the Client Support Specialist has a positive attitude, a respectful demeanor, a strong sense of humor, and be able to work independently.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify needs, make referrals to appropriate service systems, and follow up with clients.

  • Maintain client case notes.

  • Be responsible for intake of all new clients.

  • Be available for intake during food pantry hours.

  • Maintain and update Penelope client database on a daily basis along with the front desk receptionist.

  • Generate demographic reports and analysis for grant reporting in collaboration with the front desk receptionist.

  • Coordinate SNAP outreach workers and distribute that information to all staff in a timely manner.

  • Coordinate Stepping Stones Program, which provides individualized case management and wrap-around programs to program participants.

  • Staff the Wednesday evening Food Pantry hours.

  • Cover front desk duties as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director.

Compensation and Benefits:
The MLK Community Center is an equal opportunity employer. The position of Client Support Specialist Counselor is a non-exempt, part-time (20.5 hours per week) position. Possibility of additional hours in the future. Schedule is as follows: Monday 9-3, Wednesday 10-6:30, Friday 9-3. Salary starts at $17.50/hour and will be reviewed annually with increases based upon merit and performance. Benefits include vacation and sick days.

Hunger Services Assistant

Position Summary: The Hunger Services Assistant will report to the Director of Hunger Services & Volunteers. This is a part-time position and has a very general range of duties. Duties will include but are not limited to: Assisting the Mobile Food Pantry (MFP) Coordinator with all facets of the program which include administrative work, food inventory, stocking, loading/unloading truck, MP set-up/breakdown, etc. The Hunger Services Assistant will be the back-up staff member responsible for running the Wednesday evening/once-monthly Saturday morning food pantry when needed. Additional responsibilities for this position will include receiving donations/ deliveries, pick-ups, shopping at local merchants for pantry product, stocking, sorting, light cleaning, box recycling, assisting with the Feed a Friend Food Pantry and Food 2 Friends programs on an as needed basis, etc.

 

The Hunger Services Assistant will interact with clients, staff, volunteers and other community organizations. It is essential that the candidate be empathetic, courteous, highly organized, professional, meticulous with detail and protocol. As a member of a small staff that relies heavily on teamwork, it is also necessary that the Hunger Services Assistant has a positive attitude, a respectful demeanor, a strong sense of humor, and the ability to work independently. This position requires physical exertion, the ability to lift, carry, climb in/out of van/truck and driving the Center van and MFP truck. A regular, valid driver’s license is required, along with a good driving record. A medical certificate will also be necessary for driving the MFP truck.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist Mobile Food Pantry Coordinator with all facets of the MFP program

  • Drive the Food 2 Friends van and Mobile Food Pantry truck when necessary

  • Work as a team member with MLK Center staff and particularly the Hunger Services staff

  • Participate in all facets of hunger services as needed

  • Phone work, data entry

  • General duties as needed

  • Fill in for Wednesday evening and once-monthly Saturday food pantry desk staff when needed

Qualifications: 

  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

  • Able to perform rigorous physical duties: lifting, carrying, moving items, climbing in/out of box truck and van, etc.

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record; willingness to obtain a medical certificate

  • Enthusiasm for non-profit work

Work hours:

The MLK Community Center is open Monday-Friday and the first Saturday of each month. The Hunger Services Assistant’s schedule will be determined prior to hire with input from the successful candidate and senior staff.
