Founded in 1922 and renamed honoring Dr. King in 1968, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals, families and seniors. An independent nonprofit, the MLK Community Center fights hunger, promotes health, educates young and school aged kids, supports families, and engages seniors all across Newport County, Rhode Island.

Mobile Food Pantry Assistant

Position Summary: The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center has an immediate opening for a positive and empathetic person to join our Hunger Services team.  Duties include assisting with all facets of the mobile food pantry program which include administrative work, food inventory, stocking, loading/unloading truck, MFP set-up/breakdown, etc. Additional responsibilities for this position will include assisting with other hunger services programming, including receiving donations/ deliveries, pick-ups, shopping at local merchants for pantry product, stocking, sorting, light cleaning, box recycling, assisting with the Feed a Friend Food Pantry and Food 2 Friends programs on an as needed basis, etc.

Hours: 

  • ​Monday - Friday, and third Saturday of month; 40 hours/week

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bilingual (Spanish) preferred

• Able to perform rigorous physical duties: lifting, carrying, moving items, climbing in/out of box truck and van, etc.
• Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
• Enthusiasm for non-profit work
• Independent thinker who believes deeply in our mission
• Work from a strengths-based approach
• Have courteous and intuitive interactions with clients
• Possess strong communication and organizational skills
• Have a strong desire to learn
• Be sensitive to cultural and economic diversity
• Microsoft Office proficiency is necessary

Preschool Assistant Teacher

Position Summary: The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center’s preschool has an immediate opening for a positive and caring person to join our team of experienced educators. The preschool at the MLK is a licensed educational program for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Hours: 

  • ​Monday - Friday; 25 hours/week (extra hours may be available)

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school education or higher with emphasis in Administration, Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

  • Experience in an early education setting.

  • Current BCI check.

After School Program Staff

Position Summary: Staff positions are currently open in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center's Afterschool Program in Newport, RI. The program operates Monday-Friday from 1:30 - 6 p.m.

Hours: 

  • Part-time. ​Monday - Friday; 1:30 pm - 6:30 pm (subject to change)

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 18 years of age or older.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Must have experience with school aged children.

  • Must be able to pass a BCI check.

  • Must be able to work in Newport County.

  • Teaching experience/interest a plus.
