Founded in 1922 and renamed honoring Dr. King in 1968, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals, families and seniors. An independent nonprofit, the MLK Community Center fights hunger, promotes health, educates young and school aged kids, supports families, and engages seniors all across Newport County, Rhode Island.

Summer Literacy Teacher

Position Summary: Summer Literacy Teacher needed for Dr. Martin Luther King Center's Reading Reaps Rewards Summer Camp. The Summer Literacy Teacher will report to Sally Swistak, Education Director. The goal of this position is to implement the summer literacy initiative “Reading Reaps Rewards” to the children enrolled in the MLK's summer camp; to maintain or increase their literacy skills. This is a part-time seasonal position. 

Qualifications: 

  • Certified Elementary Teacher

  • Knowledge of STAR Testing

  • Creative with experiential learning, flexible and innovative

  • Current Fingerprints Required

Work hours:

25 hours/week throughout the 8 weeks of summer camp, June 22nd - August 21st.

This includes 5 hrs (preparation) and 20 hrs (contact group time)

Compensation and Benefits:
The MLK Community Center is an equal opportunity employer. The position of Summer Literacy Teacher is a non-exempt, part-time (25 hours per week) seasonal position. The position will span throughout 8 weeks of summer camp (June 22nd - August 21st). (Summer camp at the MLK spans 9 weeks, but this position is 8 weeks; there is some flexibility as to what week will be skipped.) Salary is $25/hour.

Summer Camp Staff

Position Summary: The MLK’s Summer Adventure Camp provides Newport County children with a summer filled with fun and learning. Summer Camp Staff help campers make and maintain academic strides in math, literacy, and science through hands-on activities and field trips across Aquidneck Island. We are seeking compassionate, dedicated individuals to join our team of Summer Camp Staff to oversee campers and join our team throughout the summer of 2020.

 

Camp runs from June 22 – August 21, 2020; Monday – Friday.

Qualifications: 

  • 18 years of age or older

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

  • Must have experience with school aged-children

  • Must be a strong swimmer

  • Must be able to pass a BCI check

  • Teaching experience/interest a plus

  • Chauffeur’s license a plus
