The Preschool at the MLK is an affordable licensed educational program for children 3-5 years of age.

Open from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily, our preschool provides working parents with a safe and nurturing place to care for their children during the workday.

Cost: $170 for 5 days; $136 for 4 days; $102 for 3 days.

Department of Human Service (“DHS”) childcare subsidies are accepted. Scholarships are available for families with demonstrated need. All are encouraged to apply.

Our program helped develop the RI Early Childhood Education Standards and was designated a Preschool Center of Excellence by the national Early Learning Reading First Program.

It is our goal to help build a child’s positive self image and prepare our students for school readiness. In an atmosphere of praise, we create a climate for growth of creativity, curiosity for learning and the courage to try.

After School Academy

The After School Academy at the MLK is a quality after school program for students ranging from kindergarten to 4th grade.

Serving students from Newport County, we offer affordable programming in support of our students’ academic success.

Cost: $85/week.

Department of Human Service (“DHS”) childcare subsidies are accepted. Scholarships are available for families with demonstrated need. All are encouraged to apply.

Upon arrival, the children are offered:

  • a healthy snack
  • homework help
  • art lessons
  • violin lessons with the Newport String Project
  • theater experience
  • singing with Newport County Youth Chorus
  • nutrition classes
  • STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) programming
  • & more special programming!

Summer Adventure Camp

Summer Adventure Camp is an 8-week literacy, science and math-based program for children entering 1st grade through those entering 5th grade.

2024: July 1st – August 23rd

Hours are 8 am – 4 pm

Cost: $170/week.

One of the goals of Summer Camp at the MLK is to help prevent the academic slide that normally occurs over the summer. All of the activities are fun, with a wide array of field trips integrated into an experiential learning curriculum that increases the camper’s knowledge base.

Activities/Field trips include :

  • Sailing Lessons with Sail Newport
  • Daily Beach Trips
  • Exploring the Norman Bird Sanctuary
  • Singing with Newport County Youth Chorus
  • Marine Explorations
  • Gardening with Aquidneck Community Table
