“Everyone here loves Summer Camp.  It makes you smart and helps you get ahead.  If you didn’t go to the MLK, you wouldn’t know anything when you went back to school.” – Summer Camper

EDUCATION PROGRAMMING & SUMMER CAMP

Diversity is a hallmark of the MLK education programs. Families of varied ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, and countries of origin enroll their children at the Center. The Preschool is an award-winning, literacy-rich program that prepares children for academic success. Our teachers are experienced in working with all types of learners. Our Director of Education has 32 years of teaching experience, our PreK teacher has 21 years of teaching experience, and our other preschool teachers have almost 20 years of teaching experience.

Children come to us from families who have recently moved to this country, whose parents teach at the War College, whose parents are professionals such as doctors, and whose parents work in the local service industry. Languages spoken in the home include English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The MLK has become the preschool of choice for many families who speak no English. Our children begin Kindergarten academically, socially and emotionally ready. Over 80% of our children routinely begin Kindergarten already reading.

Our Out of School Time programs, during the school year and summer, help students stay on track academically and promote lifelong learning.  Children are bused to the MLK after school, where they receive a hot meal, homework help, and the opportunity to explore a wide variety of enrichment activities. Violin lessons are available through a collaboration with Newport String Project. Children can also take art lessons, explore their creativity through a maker’s lab, sing with Newport County Youth Chorus, and theater.

Summer Camp is 8 weeks of fun both here at the MLK and at venues throughout Newport County. Established to prevent the summer learning slide, students participate in literacy, math, cooking, and creativity classes that are combined with: sailing lessons at Sail Newport; hiking trips at Ballard Park and Norman Bird Sanctuary; gardening at our community garden plot with Aquidneck Community Table; science-based field trips to URI’s Biomedical Lab, NUWC, and Save the Bay’s Exploration Center; trips aboard the Aurora; and field trips to the beach, the library, International Tennis Hall of Fame, and local museums.  Camp is the highlight of the summer for our campers, who return year after year.  And their parents are extremely happy that they have not lost the typical 2 months of learning over the summer, but have actually increased their reading and math levels!

“My children’s emotional, physical, mental and academic well-being is taken care of at the MLK….what more could a parent ask for?”
