Centennial Celebration: Our original mission statement

Same Center, new century…

In 2022 we’re known as many different things like the MLK, the Center and the MLK Center, but do you know what we were originally called?

The Newport Community Center.

In 1922, the Center’s original mission statement was:

”To preserve a children’s playground, and an historic building, and to establish a community center for all ages and classes, which is recreational, educational and cultural in character”

(And, one of our earliest annual reports states the Center worked to eliminate the death of children by automobile. We’re amazed by that, too. But, in the 20s and 30s, the automobile was relatively new and safety was a primary concern.)

Fast forward one century later and though you’ll find though our current mission has changed, we have the same goals in mind:

“We nourish, educate, and support Newport County residents to improve their economic, social, and physical well-being.”

Whether it be through our healthy cooking classes, Food Pantry, education programs or holiday help, the Center remains committed to supporting Newport County anyway we can.

Sankofa Community Connection joins Lunch & Learn for Black History Month presentation and Black History Bingo!

Thanks to our friend Niko Merritt, Executive Director at Sankofa Community Connection, our seniors at Lunch & Learn enjoyed an amazing Black History Month celebration this week!

Did you know that the three-light traffic signal that we still see at intersections today was created by famous black inventor Garret Morgan in 1923?

Well, thanks to this Black History Month lesson at Lunch & Learn, now you do!

The interactive presentation was loaded with information and facts about numerous everyday inventions that were created by black inventors throughout history.

Following the presentation, Niko made sure to keep things interesting with a few rounds of Black History Bingo that celebrated some of history’s most influential people like Jackie Robinson, Harriet Tubman, Barack Obama and George Washington Carver.

There’s something in the wonder box, I wonder what it is?”

Our Peaceful Warrior program by Powered by Prince adds mindfulness and movement through the power of yoga for our kids.

Once every other week, this program provides a great way for our students to benefit from stretching, breathing and decompression techniques.

At the end of this lesson, our kids reflect on previous lessons and use their creativity, curiosity and imagination to guess what’s inside The Wonder Box.

After singing The Wonder Box Song (“There’s something in The Wonder Box, I wonder what it is?!”) and guessing what’s inside, we open the box and see the item wrapped in tissue paper.

Before revealing what else is in the box, we read the quote on the inside together, this week was: “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.” – Dr Wayne W. Dyer

Inside The Wonder Box, the kids were also greeted with images, quotes and passages from the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to further their lesson on peace and kindness.

The items in the box are often a heart with a word on it, so what was in the box this time, you ask?

A stone heart with the word “peace” written on it!

Once the item is revealed, we like to pass it around the room so our children (if they’re feeling comfortable, of course) can share what brings them peace!

Same Center, new century…
