Wishing you a Healthy and Happy New Year

After a very difficult day for our country on Wednesday, we can only say that the MLK is still here, today and every day, uplifting our community, doing the work. Hot soup was distributed on Thursday (at our Edward St entrance) from 11:30 am to 1 pm for anyone in need of a hot grab-n-go meal.

On the first Saturday of the month, the MLK holds our on-site food pantry from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for those who might not be able to make it to the Center during the week due to work or other commitments. January's Saturday food pantry will be held this coming Saturday, January 9th because the Center was closed last weekend.

Starting this week, our friends at the Edward King House Senior Center will use their facilities as a RIDOH/RI National Guard COVID-19 Rapid Test Site. Tests will be given on Thursdays and Fridays in January from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Edward King House, located at 35 King Street in Newport.

This is a walk-in, free service. Masks must be worn, and waiting is outdoors, so please plan accordingly. First come, first served; no appointments accepted.

Fitness programming returns to the Center in 2021 - socially-distanced and masked, of course! Toning in '21 (formerly "Shape Up") will meet each Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Zumba will also resume Thursday mornings at 8:30 a.m., masked and socially-distant. Fitness classes are free & suitable for all skill-levels.

Class sizes are extremely limited for social distancing, so please reserve your spot: email or call (401) 846-4828 x124.

Need to get rid of your old electronics? Our friends at Indie Cycle, LLC will return to the Center for a drive-up electronics recycling drive on Saturday, February 20th from 9 a.m. to noon. Just open your trunk and a volunteer will grab your recyclables! A list of accepted electronics is available in the Facebook event.

In celebration of Dr. King's 92nd birthday, the MLK Center will hold a special MLK Day Grab 'n Go meal on Monday, January 18th (MLK Day) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in service for those in need and to celebrate his life. A festive meal and sides will be served, plus a delicious dessert treat. Masks required, and no eating on-site permitted. Please note that all Grab 'n Go meals have moved around the corner to our Edward St. entrance for the colder months ahead.

"I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
