It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Thanksgiving...

Updated: Nov 22, 2020

Whatever your Thanksgiving looks like this year, we're here for Newport County. Our Thanksgiving food distribution has been underway since this past Wednesday and will run until Tuesday, November 24th. Registered individuals and families receive a turkey and all the fixings for a traditional Thanksgiving meal for their household. Our socially-distant Thanksgiving distribution room is full with fresh produce, fresh rolls, milk, eggs, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, and a turkey for every table, thanks to our generous donors and community.

A collaboration between Pennfield School and the MLK

This past Wednesday, November 18th, Preschool students enjoyed the first Diversity Book Club meeting via Zoom, a collaboration between the MLK Community Center and Pennfield School's Diversity, Equity, and Justice Committee. Each month, students will meet virtually for story time, featuring a book with diverse characters and messages of equality, followed by a joint physical and art activity. This meeting's story was "One Love" by Cedella Marley, adapted from the beloved Bob Marley song. This innovative initiative allows Newport County children to meet, make new friends, and have fun while learning about diversity and acceptance.

2:1 Matching Campaign

We know - you haven't even brined the turkey yet - but here's a heads-up about Giving Tuesday, the annual global day of charitable giving, on Tuesday, December 1st. The need for support is greater than ever this year, given the unprecedented demand on our programming. Our goal this year is to raise $4,786. 4,786 is how many people the MLK is on-track to serve in 2020, more than we've ever served in our near-100 year history.

And - your dollars can go even further this year. Our friends at Phoenix Bulk Carriers (PBC) will generously matching every dollar donated to the MLK 2 for 1, up to $9,572 (two times our goal). In other words, donate $20 and it becomes $40 total, donate $50 and it becomes $100 total thanks to PBC.

Don't want to wait until Giving Tuesday? No worries. You can donate today, but be sure to select "Giving Tuesday" in PayPal's optional dropdown so your gift is matched 2:1!

Now more than ever, supporting local businesses is so important. So many small businesses are champions for the MLK, and we would not be the Center we are today without their steadfast support. The following local businesses in particular have put incredible holiday programs in place to benefit the MLK:

Sardella's "Give a Gift, Get a Gift": Receive a $25 Sardella's Italian Restaurant gift card with every $25 donation to the Center through their "Give a Gift, Get a Gift" program. To participate, make a check out to "the MLK Center" and mail it to Sardella's. More information

Primavera: Primavera Newport is holding their 6th annual Black Friday Shopping Day to benefit the MLK Community Center. On Friday, November 27th, 10% of all sales will be donated to the MLK. Primavera is stocked with unique gifts you can't find anywhere else. A win/win! Visit their website

Newport Restaurant Group: Newport Restaurant Group is once again donating $1 to local nonprofits, including the MLK, with every gift card purchase throughout the holiday season. And: for every $500 worth of gift cards you buy, you will receive a $100 complimentary card. More info

Papers: As a part of their ongoing Closing Business sale, Papers of Newport is donating a $10 gift card to the MLK's Holiday Help program with every $100 purchase (personalized stationery excluded). Congratulations on your retirement, Judy! We're sad to see Papers go. Visit their website
