UPDATES FROM THE MLK COMMUNITY CENTER

Friday, January 29, 2021

"It's sad when you think vegetables are a luxury."

Linda* is in her late 50s, a single mother who raised her son on her own. All her life, she's worked in the hospitality industry, progressing her way up to hotel management. Linda required surgery for a serious muscular injury, so she is out of work to recover and recuperate, and is still waiting to receive Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) benefits. In the month following her surgery, Linda reached out to the MLK Community Center to inquire if "anyone" could get vegetables at our weekly Veggie Day program. “It has been over a month with no TDI yet, so I am trying to figure something out. It's sad when you think fresh vegetables are a luxury.” We explained that she can get fresh vegetables each week at Thursday's Veggie Day and can use the food pantry once a month. Our staff explained that she can shop our food pantry and receive about two weeks' worth of food: from pantry essentials to meat, milk, and eggs. Linda struggles to admit she needs help right now. “I just need to get over my pride," she said.

At the urging of our staff, Linda nervously agreed to visit the food pantry and came to the Center for the first time on Monday. Initially reluctant to take food, we were able to convince her to take what she needed. As she left she thanked us and said, “You guys saved me.”

Are you a sustaining monthly donor to the MLK? If so, is your credit card info up to date? Many friends of the Center choose to give monthly. Monthly giving is easier on your budget and might make it possible to give a bit more, since the donation is spread over time. And, it's great for the MLK to know we can count on those recurring donations each month.

Are you an existing monthly donor and need to update your credit card? Are you interested in becoming a monthly donor? Reach out to Alyson via email or by phone: (401) 846-4828 x102. (You can also just select the monthly giving option in PayPal, below!)
