Join us for free Surf & Turf community dinner Wed. 12/1 🍖

Wednesday, November 24, 2021

Thanksgiving at the MLK is all about the dignity of choice ... and the generosity of our community.

This year, over 550 families from across Newport County chose items they needed from a special holiday pantry filled with fresh produce (potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, celery, and apples), stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, shelf stable milk, eggs, an apple or pumpkin pie…

and a turkey for every single family.

From our families to yours, wishing you a bountiful holiday of gratitude.

*THE CENTER WILL BE CLOSED ON THU. 11/25 AND FRI. 11/26 FOR THANKSGIVING. We look forward to seeing all of our friends again when we reopen on Monday 11/29!*

Surf & Turf Holiday Dinner: Thanks to our amazingly generous friends at The Aramli Foundation and BedJet, the Center will host a special holiday dinner on Wednesday, December 1 at 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Catered by Midtown Oyster Bar, this Surf & Turf dinner is full of rich and decadent treats sure to satisfy any taste buds in attendance!

What makes this even better is that this dinner is completely FREE of charge and will also be available for takeaway options if you would rather take your delicious meal to go.

All are welcome to join us as we kick off the holiday season deliciously. See you there!

Primavera: Primavera Newport is holding their 7th annual "Good Karma" Friday Shopping Day to benefit the Center. On the day after Thanksgiving, do more than shop, bank some karma! One Friday, November 26th, 10% of all sales at Primavera will be donated to the MLK.

Get Ready: Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, Nov. 30!

#GivingTuesday Just 6 days away, Giving Tuesday is almost here and we're asking you to give to support our community. As you reflect on Thanksgiving and begin your holiday shopping, please consider the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center and the 4,998 of your Newport County neighbors we helped last year. We can only feed hungry people , help our children excel and help neighbors embrace healthy lifestyles because of your help. We have a goal of raising $4,998 this Giving Tuesday November 30 –– one dollar for each person we served in 2020. Every gift matters and thanks to the generosity of Gail Jacobs and Roy Williams, every $1 gifted to the center on Giving Tuesday will be matched at a 2:1 ratio up to $9,996. Isn't that incredible? Want to get a jump on your part and give back to your community on the global day of giving and generosity? You don't need to wait til November 30. Click the button below now and donate. Thank you!

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...everywhere you go"

The Thanksgiving turkey hasn't even been served and yet Santa's helpers have already arrived at the Center preparing for Santa's Workshop next month. Our elves are hard at work making sure over 800 children will have toys and gifts this Christmas. Interested in making Christmas a special time for the children in our community? You've come to the right place! Santa's Workshop will be held on Wednesday, December 15 –– Friday, December 17. We kindly ask that you deliver your new, unwrapped toys to our loading dock by Monday, November 29, or as soon as possible. PREFERRED DONATION LIST

FOOD PANTRY FEATURE: Granola, protein and breakfast bars!

What's your favorite nutrition bar of choice?

Personally, we absolutely love all kinds of nutrition bars and we're not even picky about variety.

Why aren't we picky, you ask?

Great question. Because nutrition bars of any sorts make for a lightweight, shelf-stable way to get essential nutrients and calories!

Some clients struggle with homelessness and we love being able to offer something called "friend packs" here at the Center.

What is a "friend pack," you ask? Well, it's simple! A friend pack is something we give to our friends at the Center who need a little extra energy between visits to the food pantry.

The food pantry accepts donations from Monday –– Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

This holiday season shop local and support the MLK!

Once again Newport Restaurant Group's (NRG) annual holiday gift card sale benefits local hunger relief organizations like the MLK. From our friends at NRG: "There are many in our community where food and nutritional insecurity is an everyday struggle. Born from our employee-owner’s desire to support the greater good, the Newport Restaurant Group proudly donates $2 for every gift card order sold to local food banks and area non-profits committed to building a sustainable and local food supply for those in need."
