STAY IN THE LOOP WITH MLK WEATHER ALERTS
Cancellation/delay notices sent via RI Broadcasters
It appears that we're having one of those winters again - one where there seems to be a different snow shower every week.
If you're not signed up already, you can receive real-time alerts from the MLK regarding any weather-related programming changes (cancellations, delays, etc.) by signing up for text message/email alerts from the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association. This includes notices for all of our programs (education, food, and community) and volunteer opportunity cancellations. RI Broadcasters are also responsible for posting closures to local news stations, so if the MLK had any programming changes, you'd also see any of our program changes on your local news station.
To register, visit the link below and look for us under the 9.) Preschools/DayCare category (listed as Martin Luther King Comm. Ctr) and under the 11.) Businesses category (listed as MLK Community Center). Simply check the box, and hit "Submit" at the bottom of the page.
MYSTIC PINES CANDLE SALES TO BENEFIT THE MLK
Not only do Mystic Pines Candles smell incredible, throughout the month of February 30% of candle sales (on candles not already connected to a charitable cause) will benefit the MLK Community Center. These candles come with a custom MLK label and featuring a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quote, a collectors item for all of our rockstar MLK Center supporters ;)
CARGILL JOB FAIR
Stop by Cargill's upcoming job fair on Saturday, February 20th between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to learn about current job openings in nearby North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Did we mention there's a $1,200 sign-on bonus!?
This will be a COVID-friendly event, with social distancing measures in place. Masks must be worn at all times.
FISH 'N CHIPS... FOR GOOD O'Brien's Pub & friends around the Island are contributing 10% of all fish & chips sales to the MLK Center throughout the month of February. Midtown Oyster Bar, the Atlantic Grille, and Fieldstones Grille are also participating -- and the Fitzpatrick Team and the Tavern on Broadway have agreed to match O'Brien's donation amount! What's more, Breakwater Surf Co. is offering a 25% discount on a full-priced item to anyone who shows a receipt from a participating restaurant. These promotions are month-long!
AARP TAX-AIDE UPDATE
One of our most asked-about programs this year has been the AARP Tax-Aide program. Unfortunately, things still remain uncertain. We do know that all AARP tax prep programs this year are virtual, so there will be no meeting in-person. For now, you're able to contact the Edward King House (401-846-7426) or the Portsmouth Senior Center (401-683-4106) to schedule your virtual tax-prep appointments there.
